Reusefully Investigates Wastage Rates for Blocks, Bricks and Ready Mixed Concrete

Simon Guy • 23 May 2022

Reusefully is carrying out a study to provide an updated set of wastage rates for blocks, bricks and ready mixed concrete. MPA Masonry, the Brick Development Association (BDA) and the British Ready Mixed Concrete Association (BRMCA) are funding this work to update site wastage rate figures.

The current benchmarks were developed well over 10 years ago and are used in various assessments, such as the RICS Professional Statement on whole life carbon assessment for the built environment and in life cycle assessment databases and other related activities.

A major part of the study revolves around obtaining recent site-based data on the amounts and causes of waste in the procurement, handling and installation of bricks, blocks and ready mixed concrete. MPA Masonry & Reusefully are therefore seeking contractors, sub-contractors, clients, housebuilders and other supply chain partners who may be able to provide such data. For example, where there are site-based targets for waste reduction or achieving Zero Avoidable Waste. Data will be anonymised and used to prioritise supplier-based actions to help reduce site-based waste and hence, costs associated with unused materials and their subsequent management.
